The Next Bakery on South Lumpkin, and the Five Points Morning It Joins

Sometime this fall, an Atlanta bakery founded in 1929 plans to open its doors at 1573 South Lumpkin Street, where the Five Points Subway used to be. Henri's Bakery & Deli is the newest name coming to the strip. It's also the latest sign of a shift on this stretch of South Lumpkin. The block has always done mornings well, and this year its daytime side kept growing while its dinner side lost a tenant.

That matters if you live within walking distance. Over a little more than a hundred street numbers, from Henri's at 1573 to ADD Drug at 1695, this part of Five Points already has a bakery, a lunch counter, a chocolate cafe and a bottle shop. Now it's adding a second place to buy bread and pastries.

What's Coming to 1573

The Athens Banner-Herald announced Henri's on Aug. 19, 2026. It described the bakery as a nearly century-old Atlanta institution aiming to open in fall 2026, with no grand-opening date announced. A Flagpole food roundup on Sept. 10 still listed the Lumpkin Street location as opening "this fall." As of early October, the company's Athens careers page is taking applications and résumés. Hiring usually happens shortly before an opening, but no date has been made public.

The history explains the attention. French-born baker Henry Fiscus started Henri's in 1929 after buying a French bakery in Midtown Atlanta. The business moved to its long-running Irby Avenue location in Buckhead in 1969. The Red & Black reported that after Fiscus died in 1974, his grandchildren kept the bakery going and kept his family recipes.

Here's what the menu points to:

  • Deli: The Turkey and Roast Beef Po Boy, the Italian Sub and house-made Chicken Salad are the items Henri's calls guest favorites.
  • Cookies: The bakery menu calls them "Henri's Famous Shortbread Cookies."
  • Cake: Swiss Mocha Cake is one of its classic cakes, made with yellow cake, raspberry compote and mocha-flavored Italian meringue buttercream.

Henri's deli sandwiches give the block a lunch it can take to go. Its shortbread and cakes stack up against what the block already sells.

Down the Block, Mornings Already Start at 7

Independent Baking Company has been at 1625 South Lumpkin since Thom Leonard and other local partners founded it in 2013. Visit Athens lists its hours as 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. It sells breads, viennoiserie and coffee. Flagpole readers named it Favorite Bakery in 2025. Henri's will be roughly fifty street numbers away. That makes this short stretch of Lumpkin a place with two bakeries, each with its own long-standing following.

At the other end of the strip, ADD Drug at 1695 South Lumpkin has been open since 1961. The Red & Black's Spring/Summer 2026 dining guide says both the pharmacy and its old-fashioned lunch counter are still open. The guide suggests coming in the morning or early afternoon for breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and milkshakes.

Across the street at 1658, brothers Nick and Peter Dale opened Condor Chocolates in 2014. It was Athens' first specialty chocolate shop, and it makes bean-to-bar chocolate from Ecuadorian cacao, a nod to their mother's home country. Visit Athens says the cafe serves hot chocolate, brownies and coffee, whether you want a morning caffeine stop or an evening dessert. In 2025, its honeycomb toffee won in the Food category of Garden & Gun's Made in the South Awards. Judge Wayne Curtis described it this way:

"The indulgent toffee gets made with Georgia honey, using a method that renders it airy and crisp. . . It should probably be listed as a controlled substance."

Coffee fills in the rest. Jittery Joe's, the Athens coffee brand founded in 1994, has a Five Points shop at 1230 South Milledge Avenue.

The Strip by Street Number

Here's where everything sits on South Lumpkin, by address, including the one space whose next tenant hasn't been named:

Addresses and menus come from the Visit Athens Five Points dining guide published Feb. 16, 2026, and from the businesses' own listings. That guide was published before Slater's closed, so the 1653 entry above reflects the later closure coverage.

The table shows what the block has to offer before noon: Independent Baking at 1625, Condor at 1658, ADD Drug at 1695, and soon Henri's at 1573.

The Dinner Side Changed Hands This Year

Slater's Steakhouse at 1653 South Lumpkin served its last dinner on May 17, 2026, after three and a half years in Five Points. The Red & Black reported that owner Jerry Slater, who opened it with his wife Krista, modeled it on an "old-school Chicago" Midwestern steakhouse, with red velvet curtains, jazz and candlelit tables. According to the same report, the space was sold to another Athens restaurant owner and will be renovated into a new space. As of early October, there's been no public word on who bought it, what concept is going in or when it will open.

The Slaters are still on the block. They own The Expat, the Italian-focused bistro at 1680 South Lumpkin. Visit Athens mentions its seasonal pasta, lobster tagliatelle, burrata and butterscotch budino. Their newest project, Dovetail Market, opened Memorial Day weekend at 497 Prince Avenue. It's a market with a lunch counter and dinner service, and it's in a different part of town.

Bar Bruno at 1664 is moving into daytime too. The women-owned Italian wine and aperitivo bar won Best Wine Bar in the Red & Black's 2025 awards. Its listing now includes frittata, maritozzi and a limited number of panini, though it doesn't give a date for that menu change.

Retail on Lumpkin has thinned out. Avid Bookshop moved from South Lumpkin to Barber Street in spring 2025. Then it closed its physical store on April 26, 2026, while keeping online sales, occasional events and book clubs going. In January 2026, Flagpole's roundup of the previous year's restaurant news counted the Five Points J. Christopher's among its 2025 closures and noted that Boba Mania had opened.

A Fall Morning on Lumpkin, in Order

With Henri's coming, here's a walking route that follows the street numbers:

  1. Start at 1695. ADD Drug's lunch counter serves breakfast in the morning and early afternoon.
  2. Cross to 1658. Get a hot chocolate or coffee at Condor, and maybe a bag of honeycomb toffee to take home.
  3. Walk down to 1625. Independent Baking opens at 7 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, according to its listing. Sesame-semolina loaves and morning rolls are among its best-known items.
  4. Finish at 1573 once it opens. A Henri's Italian Sub or Chicken Salad covers lunch for later.
  5. Pick up something for the evening at 1655. Five Points Bottle Shop is next door to the former Slater's space and is listing October 2026 products.

On Sundays, ZZ & Simone's at 1540 South Lumpkin serves brunch. Five & Ten at 1073 South Milledge has a Mexican-inspired Sunday menu, and its calendar lists Miss Thing's drag brunch on Oct. 24, 2026. For an evening plan, The Root, downstairs from The Pine at 1235 South Milledge, hosts a free comedy night with Lanny Farmer on the first Wednesday of every month from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Its listings run through August 2027.

Hours and menus above come from each business's listing. Check before a Monday visit, especially at Independent Baking, since its listed hours run Tuesday through Saturday.

The two things to watch on South Lumpkin this fall are Henri's opening date at 1573 and the name of whoever takes over 1653.
